Stock and semi-custom lines come in fixed increments. Custom comes in whatever dimension the room actually is.

In detail
Custom cabinetry
The practical difference is not quality — good semi-custom cabinetry is very well made — it is dimension and freedom. A custom shop builds to the exact width, so a run finishes against the wall without a filler strip; to the exact height, so the uppers meet the ceiling without a gap stuffed with trim; and in whatever species, door style and finish you want rather than what a catalogue offers. Interior fittings, drawer depths and awkward corners get designed rather than worked around.
It costs more and takes longer — a custom shop is typically twelve to twenty weeks against eight to twelve for semi-custom — and it is worth it in specific situations: a room with high or sloping ceilings, an older house where nothing is square, a species or finish nobody stocks, a plan where a standard module simply will not fit, or a piece of furniture-grade millwork that has to look built-in rather than installed. Where none of those apply we will say so, because custom is not automatically the better answer and the premium is real.

Questions
Asked most aboutcustom cabinetry
Is custom cabinetry worth it over semi-custom?
In specific situations, clearly — high or sloping ceilings, an older house where nothing is square, a species or finish nobody stocks, or a layout a standard module cannot fit. Where none of those apply, a good semi-custom line gives comparable build quality for meaningfully less, and we will tell you that rather than selling the upgrade.
How long does custom cabinetry take to build?
Twelve to twenty weeks is typical from signed-off elevations, against eight to twelve for semi-custom. That lead time drives the whole kitchen schedule, which is why the cabinetry decision closes before demolition rather than during it.
