Kitchen Remodeling

Appliancesand ventilationspecified before ordering.

An appliance chosen after the cabinets are ordered is an appliance that will not fit. The specification comes first.

In detail

Appliances & ventilation

Every appliance carries a specification sheet with a required opening, a service clearance, a door swing and an electrical or gas requirement, and they differ between manufacturers by enough to matter. A panel-ready refrigerator needs a panel made to the maker’s dimensions; a built-in oven needs a cabinet built to its cut-out; a pro range needs a wider gap, more clearance to combustibles and a much larger duct. We collect those sheets before cabinetry is drawn, not after it is delivered.

Ventilation is the part most often got wrong. The hood has to be sized to the appliance and to the run of duct it feeds, ducted to the exterior in rigid duct of the correct diameter, with a short a route as the plan allows and a proper exterior termination. Recirculating hoods filter grease and return the heat and the moisture straight back into the room. Where a range is powerful enough, code may also require make-up air, which has to be planned into the design rather than discovered at inspection.

What this covers

  • Specification sheets collected before cabinetry is drawn
  • Openings, clearances and door swings checked against the layout
  • Rigid duct to the exterior, sized to the hood and the run
  • Make-up air planned in where the appliance and code require it

Questions

Asked most aboutappliances & ventilation

Does a range hood have to vent outside?

For any real cooking, it should. A recirculating hood traps grease in a filter and returns heat, steam and odour to the room, which is why kitchens with one feel humid and greasy over time. Ducting to the exterior in rigid duct, sized to the hood, is the only arrangement that actually removes what you are producing.

What is make-up air and do I need it?

A powerful hood extracts more air than a reasonably sealed house can replace, which depressurises the building and can pull combustion gases back down a flue. Above a certain extraction rate, code requires a make-up air supply to compensate. It has to be designed in — it affects the duct layout and the budget — so we establish the hood specification early.
