Kitchen Remodeling

Cabinetryand millworkdrawn to your room.

Stock cabinetry is drawn for a room that does not exist. Yours is out of square, and the boxes have to know that.

In detail

Cabinetry & millwork

No wall in an older New Jersey house is plumb, no floor is level and no corner is ninety degrees. Cabinetry that is designed on a nominal grid and installed against those realities ends up with tapering gaps, doors that do not align and a filler strip apologising in every corner. We measure the actual room — including how much the floor falls across a run — draw the elevations to it, and scribe the finished work on site so the reveal is consistent all the way along.

On construction and finish: framed cabinetry is the workhorse and the most forgiving; full-overlay gives a cleaner face with tighter tolerances; inset is the most demanding to build and to hang and is the one that shows every millimetre, which is why it costs what it costs. Painted maple takes a finish beautifully; rift white oak is the current answer for anyone who wants grain without busyness. Interiors, drawer boxes and hardware are specified explicitly rather than left to the line — that is where cheap cabinetry hides.

Questions

Asked most aboutcabinetry & millwork

How far ahead do kitchen cabinets need to be ordered?

Semi-custom lines run eight to twelve weeks and full custom shops twelve to twenty, so cabinetry is ordered the moment the elevations are signed off — usually weeks before demolition. That is why we close the whole selection package before anything is torn out: a cabinet changed after the order resets that clock from zero.

What is the difference between framed, full-overlay and inset?

Framed cabinetry has a face frame with doors sitting on it, and it is the most tolerant of an imperfect room. Full-overlay covers the frame almost entirely for a cleaner look and needs tighter tolerances. Inset sets the door flush within the frame, which is the most exacting to build and to hang and the least forgiving of movement — beautiful, and priced accordingly.
