Stone is cut from a measurement of the room as built, not from the drawing of the room as imagined.

In detail

Countertops & backsplash

Templating happens after the cabinet boxes are set and levelled, because that is the only point at which the real dimensions exist. A digital template picks up the actual run, the wall behind it and any out-of-square, so the finished piece meets the wall along its whole length instead of leaving a wedge to be filled with caulk. Seam positions are agreed with you rather than decided at the saw, and on a figured stone the seam and the veining are planned together.

On material, we would rather be blunt than sell you a regret. Quartz is engineered, consistent and effectively maintenance free. Quartzite is natural, hard, and behaves well in a working kitchen. Marble is the most beautiful and it will etch — not might, will — wherever acid touches it, and if that will bother you it is the wrong choice no matter how it looks in the yard. Porcelain is extremely hard and available in large format with almost no seams. Backsplashes run from handmade zellige, which is deliberately irregular, to large-format porcelain that is deliberately not.

Questions

Asked most aboutcountertops & backsplash

Will a marble countertop etch in a working kitchen?

Yes. Marble is calcareous, so anything acidic — lemon, wine, vinegar, some cleaners — dulls the polish where it touches. Sealing reduces staining but does not prevent etching. Plenty of people love the patina that develops and choose it anyway; what matters is that you choose it knowing, rather than discovering it in month two.

Why can the countertop not be templated before the cabinets go in?

Because the finished dimensions do not exist until the boxes are set and levelled. Templating off the drawing means cutting stone to a room that has not been built yet, and stone does not forgive being a few millimetres out. The wait between cabinet installation and stone delivery is real and we schedule around it rather than pretend it away.
