Siding

Fiber cementsidingthe default in this climate.

It is not the cheapest cladding and it is the one we specify most, because New Jersey weather is unkind to the alternatives.

In detail

Fiber cement siding

Fiber cement is cement, sand and cellulose fibre — dimensionally stable, non-combustible, unattractive to insects and almost indifferent to the freeze-thaw cycling that splits and cups other materials here. It takes and holds paint far better than wood, and it is available either pre-finished from the factory with a long finish warranty or primed for field painting in a colour of your choosing. Lap, shingle, board-and-batten and panel profiles all behave the same way behind the face.

What decides whether it performs is the installation, not the board. It is blind-nailed into the stud through the nailing strip so no fastener shows and none is overdriven. Butt joints land on studs with joint flashing behind them rather than being caulked. Clearances are respected — it sits off the roof, off the deck, off grade and off any horizontal surface by a specified distance, because fiber cement will wick water that is allowed to pool against its edge. And it goes over a water-resistive barrier, not onto bare sheathing.

What this covers

  • Blind nailing into studs, nothing overdriven and nothing face-fixed
  • Joint flashing behind butt joints rather than a bead of caulk
  • Specified clearances to roof, deck, grade and horizontal surfaces
  • Pre-finished boards or primed and field-painted, your choice

Questions

Asked most aboutfiber cement siding

How long does fiber cement siding last in New Jersey?

The board itself will see decades — it is the finish that wears. A factory finish typically carries a long warranty and may never need more than washing; field-applied paint on primed board will want repainting on a cycle measured in many years rather than a few. Either way the maintenance interval is considerably longer than wood in this climate.

Is fiber cement better than vinyl?

For most houses, yes — it is more rigid, more impact resistant, non-combustible, holds paint and reads as a substantially better material up close. Vinyl costs less, installs faster and has improved a lot. The honest answer depends on budget and on how long you are staying, and we will price both rather than steer you.
