Whole-Home Renovation

A house renovated room by room looks renovated room by room. Specifying every wet room at once is what makes it read as designed.

In detail

Kitchen, baths & millwork

In a whole-home renovation the kitchen, every bathroom, the laundry and any built-in millwork are drawn and specified together rather than sequentially. That means one hardware family across the house, tile and stone selected against each other rather than in isolation, paint sampled in the actual rooms under the actual light, and a consistent standard of cabinetry rather than a good kitchen and an apologetic hall bath.

It also means the ordering is coordinated. Cabinetry lead times run to months and stone is templated on site after the boxes are set, so the sequence has to be planned backwards from installation. Getting that wrong is how a renovation stalls with a house full of trades waiting on one delivery. We place the orders against a schedule rather than against enthusiasm.

Questions

Asked most aboutkitchen, baths & millwork

Should every bathroom in the house be done at once?

If the budget allows, yes. The trades are already there, the walls are already open, and specifying them together is what makes the tile, stone and fittings agree rather than arriving from three separate decisions a year apart. Phasing bathrooms means paying the mobilisation twice and living with a house that does not match.

When do cabinetry and stone need to be chosen?

Earlier than most people expect. Semi-custom cabinetry runs eight to twelve weeks and full custom considerably longer, so the selection has to close well before the rooms are ready for it. Stone is different — it is templated on site after the cabinets are set — but the slab is usually chosen and reserved much earlier.
