Bathroom Renovation

Tile, stoneand fixtureswhere it gets judged.

Everything underneath decides whether the bathroom lasts. This is the part that decides whether it looks like it cost what it cost.

In detail

Tile, stone & fixtures

Tile is set out before it is set. Where the full tiles land and where the cuts fall is a decision — a centred layout that leaves a sliver in both corners is a decision nobody made. We work the setting-out from the most visible wall and the sightline as you enter, keep cuts to the least seen corners, and line the horizontal joints through between walls and into the niche so the room reads as one surface rather than four separate tiling jobs.

Underneath, the mortar coverage matters more than anything on the specification. Large-format tile needs full support: back-buttered and beaten in to near-total coverage, because voids under a large tile are where it cracks when something is dropped and where water sits if it ever gets through the grout. Then the fittings — stone tops, glass, vanity, brassware — installed last onto work that is already sound, with the glass measured after tiling rather than ordered from the drawing.

Questions

Asked most abouttile, stone & fixtures

Why does large-format tile need full mortar coverage?

Because a void under a large tile is an unsupported span. Anything dropped on it cracks the tile at the void, and if water ever gets through the grout it collects there rather than draining. Coverage is achieved by back-buttering the tile as well as combing the substrate, and beating it in — not by five dabs of adhesive at the corners.

Why is the shower glass ordered after tiling?

Because it is measured off the finished tiled openings, which are never exactly what the drawing said. Glass is cut to size and cannot be trimmed on site, so it is templated after tiling and grouting. That is a genuine wait of a week or two at the end of the job, and we schedule it in rather than letting it look like a delay.
